A Mother's Prayer (by Tina Fey)

“First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.

May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.

When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half...

Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.

Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it...

May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.

Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.

And when she one day turns on me and calls me a B in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that... I will not have it.
And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.

Amen.”

Easter Love

I hope you had a lovely, blessed Easter holiday! We have much to celebrate on this earth!

While Blakely joined us just in time for Easter last year, she was by far too itty bitty to even grasp a plastic egg. So, this year was sort of her first Easter.

Blakely wasn't feelin' a mini photo shoot after church!

Hey! That's the same basket she was in last year!

Blakely--one year ago--same Easter basket. :)
John 10:10 has been on my mind lately. God has given us this gift of life and we've been asked to live it abundantly!

Here is John 10: 9-10 from The Message: "I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of."

I love that!
More and Better
Full and Satisfying
Life in Abundance

Rest in the free gift of salvation and a rich life here on earth while we wait for our eternal home!

Love to you!

He is Risen

Before I head to bed, I just want to say: HAPPY EASTER!!!

This is the most important day that I could possibly celebrate. Not only did Jesus Christ live an amazing life and die a tragic death, but he rose from the dead! I believe it. I do. With every ounce of my soul.

I'm so thankful that I can live for and love a Saviour who is very much alive! I can't wait to celebrate tomorrow!

If you don't know Jesus Christ as your personal saviour, but you'd like to, feel free to shoot me an email at thecaseforjoy@gmail.com.

I'm excited to see my Hawaii church ohana tomorrow, but I'll sure miss my dad's very animated proclamation to his congregation: He is Risen, church. He is Risen Indeed!

What a joyful day!

Had to Share: Easter Egg Cupcake Pops

So, I realize these are "all the rage" right now. I sorta wish they weren't because I never like embracing something too uber trendy, but, alas, I did!

My mom made the most adorable round cupcake pops for Blakely's luau last month. I took the recipe from her verbally and tried my rendition for Easter.

Here's how I did it. They are so easy and fun!

1. Bake a cake, crumble the baked cake in a bowl, add half a can of frosting, mix it up into one crumbly glob!

2. Shape 1 inch balls into well, whatever! Mine are egg shaped! Then pop in the fridge for several hours (probably overnight works best).

3. Pull out chilled shapes and pop sucker sticks into them, prepare a box or find Styrofoam as a holding cell, melt chocolate in a glass.

 4. Quickly dip cold shapes into chocolate and decorate, then place in box to harden. If you live in Hawaii and your inside house temp is anything like mine, try placing immediately in the fridge to encourage the hardening of the shells.

5. Package, share, and enjoy!

Tips:
  • Try to find Styrofoam for best results. If you cannot, try using a sturdy cardboard box. The Wheat Thins box that I used on my first try was too flimsy.
  • Make your shapes large enough so that they won't fall apart when you dip them.
  • Use Wilton's chocolate or a similar brand made for hardening quickly (candy making).
  • Check Walmart's wedding supplies aisle or a craft store for the chocolate, sucker sticks, and clear bags for wrapping.
  • Use a tall glass for melting chocolate (rather than a bowl).
Happy Good Friday! I'm glad we know that this day in History was indeed good! We have much to celebrate!

Finding My Courage (well, trying to)

I shoulda surfed longer. It's so hard to climb back to the courage I used to have when facing the waves.

It may sound cliche, but being a mom sorta changes the game for me. I'm little less gutsy. Should I be?

I miss the days that Tim and I could meet at the beach after work and paddle out together! I mean, I certainly wouldn't trade anything to change this season; I adore sitting in the sand with my babe. It's just that it's different to surf alone. Even though surfing is a solitary act by nature ;).

Today I talked myself into paddling out after Tim had taken his turn. I gingerly and shallowly negotiated the reef. I aligned myself to the right of the only other surfer in the water. I perused the murky water (you know, for sharks?! -- yeah, I'm a freak). And praised God! Just because I could. The waves were pretty decent. I was starting feel bold. And peaceful.

Then. And it was a quick then. The talented young surfer girl beside me decided to paddle in. What?! Please don't go I silently wished. My nerves washed right back. Seriously. The water was murky, the reef was dense (and sharp), the tide was low, and I was alone. Yeeeaaaahhhhhh.... all I could think about was my four working limbs. It sure doesn't help that Soul Surfer just opened in theatres...

I know, I know...I've just gotta face it. I've gotta stick it out, suck it up, etc... Actually, I wish I woulda stayed in da water. Talk about a prime set of circumstances: nice clean waves and no one to compete with! I would have had all the rides I wanted. Ay... I'm so conflicted! And the thing is, I really do trust that God's got me...when I'm on land and when I'm in the water.

So I'm telling you all...next time. And I'll tell you how it goes! I want to be courageous. I need to be courageous. Both with surfing and with life.

Anyway, Blakely digs the beach and is always a trooper. Today she got especially sandy and wet. She ended up like this:

B's Luau--the Set Up

Parents--say it ain't so.... does time really go faster and faster each month/year/etc????

Ugh... where did the last three weeks go? My just turned 12 month "toddler" is almost 13 months (although, she's not toddling anywhere...yet...). I realize I'm still counting months, but will there be a time when the years fly just as quickly? I'm assuming the dreaded answer is yes. If you have tips for slowing the time down...please share!!!

Anyway, three weeks ago-or-so, we were home for a gorgeous wedding, a special 30th birthday, and Miss B's first birthday luau with family!

Right away, I shared some of the fun birthday cake pics that Yasi took (p.s. check her out here cause she just redid her website and it's Ah-mazing!).

This morning I thought I'd share more pics that Yasi snapped for us...these are "pre-party."

Mahalo to Blakely's Grandma Maureen for opening her beautiful Beaverton home for the party! We are also so thrilled both grandmas prepared such delicious pieces for the luau! Hugs & Kisses!

Aloha Friends! Happy Friday. Happy parties!

Grammar with Kate: Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

Aloha!

Did you know how versatile and cool the word buffalo is? My college student sister introduced me to the very cool sentence using only the word buffalo.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo." is a grammatically valid sentence in the English language, used as an example of how homonyms and homophones can be used to create complicated linguistic constructs.

So...buffalo is a verb (kind of like: to bully): I buffaloed, you buffaloed, we buffaloed...we were buffaloing...

Buffalo is also a noun--you know, buffalo (aka: bison).

And finally, it can technically be used as an adjective (Buffalo, New York): the Buffalo buffalo (the New York bison... get it?)

Here's more from Wikipedia:

The sentence reads as a claim that bison who are intimidated or bullied by bison are themselves intimidating or bullying to bison (at least in the city of Buffalo, impliedly Buffalo, NY):
Bison from Buffalo, New York, who are intimidated by other bison in their community, also happen to intimidate other bison in their community.

THE buffalo FROM Buffalo WHO ARE buffaloED BY buffalo FROM Buffalo, buffalo (verb) OTHER buffalo FROM Buffalo.

If you're into this (I think it's pretty darn cool/geeky), check out this YouTube video I found! Enjoy!

A Quick Glimpse: My life at school

Aloha! Good morning to you!

I know I don't talk much about my school...my high school...on my blog. Mostly because I want to respect the privacy of my students and coworkers. However, one day, when I'm much more removed, I'll have to share some cute, funny, challenging stories of all the lessons I've learned from my ever-so-charming students!

Anyway, I am quite proud of where I teach, who I teach, and those whom I teach with. I'm blessed! I do miss my baby girl tremendously when I'm at work for a good majority of the week, but I'm just thankful to feel so challenged, fulfilled, and humored (that's right, teenagers are funn-nny...even when they don't mean to be) on a daily basis.

Instead of telling you about my academy...check it out here...these are our students and this is our space (this is a commercial that our teacher's union recently made). Have a great day!

Tori's Twenty-One

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SWEET SISTER

Victoria Jeanne Blake is 21 (as of yesterday--and that's no joke! ha!). I still clearly remember the day she was born. It was a Sunday and my two younger brothers and I were hanging around church with my grandparents. Waiting for the call. I had told my mom that she'd better have a girl...or else... I think I threatened to not speak to her or something. Like that'd actually happen.

Anyway, the call came. I think on a pay phone? I remember learning it was a girl. A baby sister for me! I was nine. She was itty bitty. I was thrilled.

I feel like my dad may have come home from the hospital to get us kids! We figured since it was April Fool's Day we oughta prank our mom. Thinking back, I'm not sure why anyone would want to prank a beautiful woman who had just given birth. But what did we know about the cycle of life?! We wrapped up empty boxes and brought our mama beautiful gifts (of nothing!). Really, that's not funny at all. What were we thinking? Of course, she was gracious and laughed at our joke.

From then on, April Fool's Day has never been the same! It's easily one of my favorite days. I love pulling pranks and I love my sister even more!

BTW--I heard that my mom pulled a pretty funny joke on my sister last night! Ha! If you know Tori, you should ask her!

Dear Sister,

I hope you had a fabulous birthday yesterday! We miss you terribly! Let's Skype! Tonight! And for now... some photographs. You are beautiful. And you've always been by my side. Mahalo.

Hawaii for Cheap(er): Grow some bananas--make some bread!

Aloha!

I thought I'd start a blog segment about saving money--basically cooking and playing for less. This is crucial for my family cause many costs get hiked for islanders. However, I think most my tips can be helpful anywhere. In fact, most of my ideas are from my lovely mother who raised her 4 children on one pastor's income.

One of my favorite, or not-so-favorite, memories of growing up was drinking chunky milk! Gross, right? Well, it's not as gross as it sounds! It wasn't chunky cause it was spoiled, it was just previously frozen. With two growing brothers, my mom could barely keep our milk stocked. She would buy it from the dairy farm in bulk and then freeze full gallons in the deep freezer.

I'd often pour it over cereal only hear the *glunk, *glunk, *glunk, sound as ice chips fell onto my raisin bran. While at the time I figured I'd never freeze my own milk...it was so weird (no offense, mom)....I was wrong! My, how one's perspective can change when she pays all her own bills ;). I now think freezing milk or anything else possible is brilliant!

Okay--so I just made some awesome (healthy) banana bread with the bananas we grow in the front yard. Now, I realize that not every climate is ideal for growing bananas, but if you live in Hawaii and have a smidgen of a yard, I suggest it! They grow quickly and easily here! Getting started with a banana tree is cheap and then the production is free!

The only problem is that when you cut down the ripe bananas...they are all ready at once! Be prepared to share, bake, and freeze!

Let me share some pics and then my new fave recipe. Happy baking (and maybe growing) to you!

The trees grow quite tall and it's important to cut down the whole tree that produces the stalk of bananas.

We usually have two banana trees growing at any given time.

The trees grow new shoots so the banana tree life cycle continues pretty effortlessly.

This is maybe half of what one tree yielded a couple of weeks ago. Did I mention that they are apple bananas? Yum!

Okay--the good stuff--banana bread! I added flax seed and dark chocolate to the recipe!

Just before I baked the bread. I just put it in a 9x13 since I don't have a very big bread pan.

Whole Wheat Oatmeal Banana Bread (with added flax seed and dark chocolate)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (I used Greek)
  • 3 mashed bananas (or like 10+ mashed apple bananas)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (I'm liberal with vanilla)
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup pecans (I left this out since chopped nuts are hard for B. I added 1/4 cup flax or more and 1/2 of a crushed dark chocolate bar).
Preheat over to 350
Cream butter and sugar
Add eggs--beat
Add yogurt, bananas, and vanilla--beat
Add flour, salt, and baking soda--stir
Add oats, pecans, flax, chocolate, anything else! ha! -- stir
Bake--1 hour (check at 45 min if baking in 9x13).

Consider this:
  • Double or triple the recipe.
  • Save out what you'll eat soon.
  • Share some with neighbors.
  • Package up some loafs and pop in freezer. Enjoy later!
(I like to serve warm with ice cream for dessert!)
